Breast Lift Scars

Breast lift surgery, as with any surgery, involves incisions to the skin that typically produce scars. A scar is comprised of fibrous tissue composed of collagen. Under normal conditions, the body replaces the broken-down collagen with new collagen fibers at a rate that is in balance with the breakdown of the old collagen. Normally, this results in a scar that is flat, usually with coloring very similar to our natural skin pigment. Incisions usually heal well but there are ways you can help your body heal during your breast lift recovery to improve the appearance of your breast lift scars.

Tips for Reducing Breast Lift Scars

Take Your Time to Heal – During your breast lift recovery in Annandale, it’s important to take things slowly. Do not participate in any activity that will stretch or tear the skin around your incision since this will make it difficult to heal and may cause unnecessary scarring.

Avoid Hot Water – Hot water can extend swelling and make it difficult for your incisions to heal properly. The longer it takes for your body to heal, the more likely it is that you will have visible scarring. Dr. Nickodem will determine when you are able to resume using hot water.

Eat Well – A healthy, balanced diet that is rich in vitamins and nutrients is vital to proper healing. Your body is trying to repair itself, and any additional boost will go a long way in that process. Several foods, such as eggs and yogurt, can help reduce swelling.

Avoid Ultraviolet Rays – Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun and tanning beds can enhance the appearance of scars and make it difficult for incisions to heal. You should always wear sunscreen, especially while you are recovering from a breast lift.

Do Not Smoke or Drink – Cigarettes and alcohol can work as major roadblocks to breast lift recovery. It is recommended to avoid these habits for at least 2-4 weeks before and after your surgery.

Remember, everybody heals differently and likewise breast lift scars vary from patient to patient. Breast lift scars will be significantly less noticeable as time goes by. While scarring is certainly a concern, remember that for most patients, the benefits of a breast lift far outweigh the potential scars.
